Smooth. Succinct. If you enjoy a good wine, you'll love this beer.

Incredibly smooth with a nice malty overtone - an amazing ale

Imagine an alcohol boosted skull splitter.

Sept. 19th 2012 at Koopers North for Randy's birthday dinner. Great beer! Does not taste like it is 10.5% alcohol at all

A - dark brown with cherry or softer wood color that is translucent if very dark. Rich thick creamy head has bubbles on the side of glass but only dense cream in center. Easily foams up to creamy head upon a few swirls of the glass.
S - steely clean metallic nose - not much there - some far off scent of what's coming, but mostly hiding behind clean fresh slightly cocoa nose.
T- just marvelous. Huge alcohol content is present and not shy but washes behind a tapestry of butter chocolate raspberry (?) malty goodness wrapped in more smooth warmth from the alcohol. Huge from the start but not overpowering - commanding - smooth and very present. Some clean bitterness, especially on the sides of the mouth and cheeks, reminds of the steely nose and pure finish.
M - perhaps the best feature of the beer. How it feels is more manifest than its full-bodied rich taste. So clean, not cloying at all, but so massively strong that it feels like what the seas of an asian harbor must feel like before a tsunami. Again, deep - commanding - but not thick or sticky in any way. Easier to say what this beer is not. Via negativa as the ancient fathers would write.
O - world class. Truly. Deserves its place in the pantheon of beers. Great effort should be made to find food pairings because this is not a regular drinking beer, but a spectacular testament to what is possible through brewing. Chocolate, cherry, fudge triffle would not intimidate this bad boy. Cigars, cocoa coffee tiramisu would not displace it. Gorgeous.

Amazing. Top 3 beers of all time for me. Amazing mouthfeel, not the hang of sweetness of a Tripel, great hidden abv and incredible hop profile. Didn't fade over sips. Im a fan of big hops, and this balanced out everything I love and combinations I didn't know existed.

Complex, hides alcohol well, but a bit too sweet. One of my favorite abbeys, but I'm realizing dark abbey ales aren't my favorite style.

Not as good as the Roq... #10, but still a very good Abbey Ale...
