Coffee up front, enough hops to offset the caramelized sugar and then some. Tasted with a person who is intimidated by darker beers.. He liked it. As did I...

Tastes a little like dark cough syrup

Pours dark, like root beer. Has a nose like a Scotch ale. Coffee and brown sugar notes at tasting, along with some hops. Watch out for the high ABV. Good Shit!!

Above average brown. Fits the DFH style that I always look for, with carmel, toasted nut, bracing hoppiness, coffee, and a bit of over-booziness. That's not a slam, I personally live for 120 minute IPA when I can find it specifically for the boozy groove. Ordering another.

If I want something different, not too hoppy but dark -- then this is ok

Very sweet and full of malt. Thought it needed a bit more bittering.

July 2012. A: dark brown, looked a lot like a nice dark root beer. Small head which dissipated after a few minutes, decent lacing. Nicer looking than a typical brown ale. S: I get mostly that boozy smell typical of a higher ABV scotch ale. A bit of malt and some coffee or chocolate notes. T: Very nice tasting, a bit of booze on the front, then comes a nice dark, roasty flavor with the hints of dark chocolate and coffee that were present in the nose. Perhaps a bit of nutty flavor as well. Finishes rather short and very clean, I expected a bit more metallic finish, but am glad if's not there. M: thin body like a brown ale, light carbonation keeps it nice ad easy to drink. I wouldn't want to have more than 1 of these in a sitting, but it felt nice going down and went down pretty easy. O: very good beer, the best brown ale I've had (although I struggle to completely classify it as this style). Fits somewhere between a light porter and dark brown ale but with significant scotch ale characteristics. I'll definitely have one of these again. 4.5/5
