Venskab (9.6% ABV, 32 IBU), from their Wild Oats Series, is simply marvellous, if accordingly priced at $18.85 for 600ml (though probably worth every cent!). No ordinary tripel, as they note on their website, "Venskab was brewed based on a Belgian Tripel style. It was hopped with German Perle and Belgian Cascade, and some bog myrtle was added into the kettle to add a herbal nuance. The beer was strengthened with some organic cane sugar added into initial fermentation, then during conditioning the beer aged on Southbrook Organic Ice Wine-soaked oak chips. Venskab was then aged in Canadian white wine barrels for several months. A final touch was the addition of yuzu, a Japanese citrus fruit, and then the beer was prepared for bottle conditioning with the introduction of Champagne yeast and priming sugar." And, wow, is it ever delicious! It pours a cloudy, lightly particulate dark golden with a slight near-luminescence that is topped by a nice white head of fair retention and decent lacing. The white wine notes are present on the nose, but so too are the vanilla and woody oak traces behind the fermenting fruit hints and musty yeast characteristic of a tripel. Simply a complex marvel to taste with elements of sweet oaky vanilla up front, before a light-citrus and white wine balance in the middle, and brought up in the end by a nicely drying earthy yeastiness with a touch of yeasty spice, mostly cloves. Will add mouthfeel notes when I drink my bottle as my tour began and I didn't record these thoughts until afterwards with this somewhat slipping my mind! This isn't the best beer I have ever had, but it is pretty damn close! Grade: A+
