One of the Saranac 2014 12 beers of winter, I think this is a revised improvement of last years moonshadow black ipa. It has a better color improved flavor and aroma so not surprising they bumped up the abv and changed the name. Very dark mahogany to black in color with thick white head lasting lacing and piney hop forward aromas and subtle notes of malty sweetness. Medium in body this beer has a fresh bitter pine hop flavor balanced with a smooth nuanced roasted malt taste before finishing with a punch of citrusy bitter hops. A much hoppier beer relative to Saranac's usual line, and a vast improvement on last year's moonshadow black IPA. Very drinkable and tasty would have again.

Slight roastiness balances out the hops, not bad

Roasted malt balances the extra hops well. Good mouthfeel
