The quintessential West Coast IPA. Are there better? You bet, but this is the archetype, the one that started it all. Hops are extremely noticeable on the nose and palate, and it finishes strongly. Citrus comes through nicely, accompanying a slightly chewy mouthfeel. It's bold, if slightly unbalanced (favouring the side of hops, of course). For its name alone, Stone IPA deserves five stars--few brands, beer or otherwise, can the same be said for. The craft beer community owes a lot to this beer.

Having recently taken a tour of Stone brewery, I can now say for sure- I do not understand their hops obsession and inability (or choice not to) balance ingredients and flavors. If this IPA is good, it is because the hops are good, the brewery having added an extra large dose at the end if the process, overwhelming every other component.

Always great to drink a stone. Good hops and bitterness. Great aroma and smell.

Mild hop lemon aroma. More bitter taste than the nose leads you to believe. Just the right amount of bitterness for a go-to IPA. The flavor transitions several times - hop bite to start, citrus lemon grapefruit in the middle, sweeter pineapple melon tastes before the finish, then a pine evergreen finish. Aftertaste is a both bitter and sweet.
